Southern Griffin Venturers
The SA Lone Scouts Venturer Unit goes by the name of Southern Griffins
“Southern” - Representing both South Australia as the origin of our Unit but also the Southern hemisphere as Scouts is worldwide and we have some Venturers from other states in Australia.
“Griffins” - The griffin, griffon, or gryphon is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. The griffin's amalgamation of lion and eagle represents courage and boldness. It is used to denote strength, courage and leadership. Griffins are portrayed with a lion's body, an eagle's head, long ears, and an eagle's claws, to indicate that one must combine intelligence and strength. All of these things valuable traits of a Venturer and the members of our venturing unit.
We currently have 30 members in our unit from all over the state. Many of these venturers are also Youth Helpers and help out with younger sections that are close to them. Lone Venturers gives these members the opportunity to continue their own scouting adventures and to be a part of an active unit, as well as providing service to the groups they have grown up with or live close to.
All Lone Venturers are required by the Unit Constitution to attend one camp/event with the unit per year and communicate with the unit once a month for eleven months of the year. Regular Communication is what holds this unit together.
As we can not meet regularly due to the distance between each venturer, the unit relies on this communication and venturers attending camps together whenever possible.
These may be
• Branch camps such as Unit Management Courses or Supersplash or Easter Venture,
• SA Lone Scout Group camps such as Annual Camp and midyear camps.
• Venturer Unit Camps
The Venturer Unit communicates via phone and internet but in particular they use Facebook and have their own page to communicate on. They also use this page to discuss Unit issues or to help each other with Badge work.
Venturer Uniforms can be purchased from the scout shop. Venturers will need a uniform for official functions.
